Diarrhea:
Cause: Indigestion, loss of appetite, unclean or unbalanced diet.
Symptoms : Frequent and watery bowel movements, motions of varying colors (yellow, red, blue, and white), noise and burning in the rectum during motions, griping pain in the stomach, thirst, and weakness. Sometimes the motions are just like water.
Treatment: Mahasankha Bati, Bhaskar Lavan, Hingwastak Churna, Brihat Siddha Praneswar Ras, Brihat Agnikumar Ras, Maharaj Nripatiballav, Karpur Ras. These are the specifics for diarrhea. If the diarrhea is due to loss of appetite and indigestion, Mahasankha Bati in the morning, and Bhaskar Lavan after the two heavy meals should be given. If these two medicines do not prove sufficient, add Brihat Agnikumar Ras as an evening medicine. If there is mucus with the stool and pain in the stomach due to constipation, give Brihat Siddha Praneswar Ras or Maharaj Nripatiballav with fried cummin powder and honey. If there is pain in the stomach before, during, or after motions, give Brihat Agnikumar Ras. When motions are completely liquid, give Karpur Ras with camphor water. Where there is flatulence, use Eladi Churna; where vomiting, use Pippaladya Lauha or Brisadhwaja Ras; where fever, use Sarbajwara Bati, Ananda Bhairab Ras, Jwaranatak Lauha, with fried cumin powder and honey. Due to frequent motions and vomiting’s, the patient becomes very weak and his pulse falls. Then Mriganavi Jog, Brihat Kasturi Bhairab, etc. may be given. In chronic diarrhea, Mahagni Ras, with ground ptychotis ajowan and rocksalt do wonders.
Diet: Barley, parched rice gruel, puffed rice gruel, etc. in initial stages. When the diarrhea is arrested and hunger is present, boiled rice (old stock), fresh fish soup, musuri lentil soup, and a small quantity of spinach. Sorrel leaves have the natural property of checking diarrhea. Its boiled leaves, or a soup made there of, may be taken.
