The Age Of The Ancient Rishis

Like a blazing sun in a cloudless sky, Ayurvedic Science came to light in the age of the Aryan Seers. These rishis spent much of their time in meditation and then worked over the realizations thereof. They were essentially truth – seekers bramacharis. They lived on fruit and milk With utmost purity of mind, soul, and body they steadily sought truth. They achieved excellent memories. Their mission was to do good to others. They searched truth under the open sky, in the ground near mountains, researched, and preached their findings to the public. They discovered many things, some depending on time, place, and weather for applicability. They saw the relation between God and Nature and tried to open our minds to it. They conceived countless things and made laws for us so that we might live longer and in good health. They discovered the causes of many diseases and special properties of many remedial materials. Unique and famous in the medical world are their discoveries of Chaybanpras, Makaradhwaja, and Mritasanjibani. Up to he present no other medical science has come out with them. At the time of the rishis Ayurveda was the best and most complete medical science in the world. Many works were written but have not survived. We find references to them in the few book remaining. We read Susruta’s treatise on surgery and are astonished to find that instruments mentioned by him are now unknown to us. Modern Ayurveda looks down on surgery. India has lost the spirit of her ancestors, forgotten the original science, and Ayurveda has no proper stand. This did not happen in a day or a year. Slowly, century after century neglect and self-indulgence brought about the decay. When foreign disease arrived here , we could not even diagnose them, much less cure them. Ayurveda had fallen back. Only a few special medicines were being prepared for the rich. Ayurveda as science was wiped out. Foreigners came and picked up a few aluable things and took them away. Some treasures were looted, and some burned. But it was our inner moral degradation which left us so defenseless and unprotective. We lost our individuality, culture and sentiment. We pride ourselves on being the sons  of immortality. Actually we have become the sons of sin and death. We have lost practically all science of hygiene and health. Our Ayurvedic Science has passed into the hands of a few ignorant village quacks; it is about to disappear. And yet, and yet, not quite. There is a cry to revive it. Professor Joges Chandra Ghosh, for his try revive it, has won well-merited praise. He has scored a victory. All over India and even abroad, we meet the name of Sadhana Ausadhalaya and our hearts swell up that our culture lives yet.
