Cough:
Cause: Irritation of bile and phlegm by air.
Symptoms: Dry cough, thick but scanty mucus, broken voice, bitter taste, phlegmatic lungs, headache, dry throat, tickling throat, suffocation, trouble in coughing, thirst, fever, paleness, heavy body, and repugnance to food.
Treatment: Chyabanpras is the best medicine for both old and new cough. It is to be taken twice daily. When there is constipation, Mahadraksharista can be added to the other medicines. For new cough Makaradhawaja with powder of long pepper and honey, or Sree Chandramrita Ras with ginger juice and honey is a fine remedy. The following routine may be followed in new cough: Chyabanpras in the mornings and evenings, Mahadraksharista at 8 a. m., and Sree Chandramrita Ras before bed. If there is no constipation, Basakarista may be substituted for Mahadraksharista. When mucus is excessive, use Sringarabhra with ginger extract or juice of the vasak leaf. This medicine also acts well when there is catarrhal fever or slight temperature. Where there is emaciation due to cough, constipation and chronic fever (morning), give Sarbabhauma Ras in the morning and Chyabanpras in the evening. If there is diarrhoea, check it with Pijusballi Ras; where indigestion or loss of appetite, give Bhaskar Lavan after every meal; where catarrhal fever, give Sarbajwara Bati. Many people seem to have no cough, yet their noses are dripping mucus. In such cases use Kafa Chintamani and Naradiya Mahalakshmibilas with honey and the juice of vitex negundo leaves. For hoarseness employ Bhairab Ras, Kalayanabaleha or Brahmi Rasayan. For severe cough prescribe Swashara Jog, and for blood- vomiting Eladi Gurika with celeus aromatica. For cough with tuberculosis use Brihat Chhagaladya Ghrita, Chyabanpras, or Hema Garva Pottali Ras.
