Epilepsy:
Cause : Abnormality of the temperamental factors as a result of heredity, fear, strokes, masturbation, bites, hard drinking, mental and physical depression, etc.
Symptoms: Sudden loss of strength, heart throbbing, vacant heart, yawning, perspiration, sometimes shouting before falling senseless, then cramping of the limbs and distortion of the face, upward rolling of the eyes, immobility of eyes, thrusting of limbs, clenching of teeth, foaming of the mouth, and breathing hard. The ailment can last anywhere from a few minutes to two or three hours, after which there is relaxation, vacancy of look, and sleepiness.
Treatment : Aswagandharista, Bat Kulantak, and Chaturbhuj Ras in the early stages of the disease. After it has become chronic, use Naradiya Mahalakshmibilas, Trailokya Chintamani, Chintamani Chaturmukh, Jogendra Ras, Mahachaitas Ghrita, Trisati Prasarani Taila, etc. For the phlegmatic patient prescribe Naradiya Mahalakshmibilas with the extract of vitex negundo For the emaciated patient with leaves and honey. throbbing heart, physical weakness, and insomnia, give Chintamani Chaturmukh and Jogendra Ras, with honey and trifala juice. Trisati Prasarani Taila should be rubbed on the head and body. Mahachaitas Ghrita may also always be used. If this ghee is used along with the pills and taila, exceptional results may be obtained. If the epilepsy is due to uterine troubles, give the patient Abalabandhab Jog, Asckarista, Asoke Ghrita, or Krisna Chaturmukh. Santi Bati is a specific for this disease.
Diet: Stimulants and nutritious foods. Strong, pungent, acid, and harsh are not allowed. The patient should be relieved of mental agonies: fear, anger, grief, etc. At the time of attack the patient should be laid flat with head up. His clothes should be loosened and his face fanned. Take care that he does not injure himself in cramping. Hold him tight. See that his tongue is not cut when he clenches his teeth, by inserting a cloth in the mouth. Staying awake at night, idleness, and passion are all harmful.
