Hoarseness:
Cause: Paralysis (temporary or permanent) of the tissues near the vocal due to cold, exposure, loud speaking singing, lecturing, eating curd and other voice paralyzing foods, hysteria, obesity, obstruction in the throat, excessive mental exertion, seminal discharges, and consumption.
Symptoms: Low voice, rough and sharp voice, tickling in the throat, dry throat, dry hiccough, breathing troubles, and inability to speak out loud.
Treatment: According to cause. If it is due to cold, give Chandramrita Ras and Mahalakshmibilas. If it is due to chronic cold and cough, give Chandramrita Lauha with ginger juice and honey. If it is due to singing, public speaking, shouting, etc., use Kalyanabaleha and Brahmi Rasayan. Swashara Jog is also very good. Kalyanabaleha, Brahmi Rasayan, and Brahmi Ghrita are called for when the vocal cord is paralyzed and no sound comes from the voice.
Diet: Rice (old stock), meat soup, raw radish, mugh and gram lentils cooked in ghee, raisins, betel, pepper, and hot water. Curd, oily preparations, cold water, sour and acid foods must be avoided.
