Chronic Diarrhea:
Cause: Carelessness in diet after having diarrhea, over-eating when there is no hunger.
Symptoms: Rumbling sound in stomach, slothfulness, physical weakness, depression, paleness, semi-solid stools with mucus, stomach pain, sound during motions, loin pains, dry face, rattling in the ears, emaciation, etc.
Treatment: Same as for diarrhea if the disease has not become well established. Where well-established, give Nripatiballav, Maharaj Nripatiballav, Brihat Gangadhar Churna, Sree Madanananda Modak, Methi Modak, Jirakadi Modak, etc., and massage Brihat Grahanimihir Taila on the navel region. Puerperal diarrhoea calls for the unique remedy, Brihat Jirakadi Modak. Where the disease turns into dropsy, administer Swarna Parpati or Panchamrita Parpati. If diarrhea, fever, and dropsy occur together, use Lauha Parparti. The proper accompaniments of these medicines are fried cumin powder and honey or ghee and honey. The Parpati medicines. are called for in all cases involving diarrhea with dropsy. Salt and water should not be given in these cases. Use milk instead of water to allay thirst. Parpati medicines cure these cases within 21 days, or where very serious, within 42 days. It must be continued with patience. Even after medicine is stopped, water and salt should not be given for 2 or 3 weeks.
Diet: Barley, parched rice gruel, puffed rice gruel, etc. in initial stages. When the diarrhea is arrested and hunger is present, boiled rice (old stock), fresh fish soup, musuri lentil soup, and a small quantity of spinach. Sorrel leaves have the natural property of checking diarrhea. Its boiled leaves, or a soup made there of, may be taken.
