Treatment of Intestinal Colic In Ayurved

Intestinal Colic:

Cause : Too much spiced and pungent food, excessive cohabitation, unsuitable diet, heat, working before a hot fire, walking in the hot sun, and strenuous labor.

Symptoms : Pain 2 or 3 hours after eating, thirst, burning sensation, perspiration, and swooning. Generally the pain moves from place to place, beginning in the early afternoon or at midnight when digestion sets in. By cooling the system and maintaining a light, non- irritating diet, the pain can be minimized.

Treatment: Rasendra Churna or Brihat Sulantak Jog with equal portions of hot water for temporary relief when pain is excessive. Baskar Bajrajog (also with hot water) will also give temporary relief. To cure this disease Dhatri Lauha is the best drug. Break a pill into three equal parts, give one part before lunch, one during, and one after. The last portion should be swallowed before the patient leaves the table. Accompanying drinks for this pill are lime water, green cocoanut water, or juice of emblic myrobalan and honey. Three other medicines are also to be taken Mahatikta Bati in the morning, Bidyadharavra in the evening, and Sulantak Jog two hours after the mid-day meal. Amlaki Khanda is a marvellous medicine for colic pain. It may be given with the Dhatri Lauha pill. To get rid of the pain, the juice of trifala, honey, and either Brihat Batchintamani or Chintamani Chaturmukh may be taken in the evening. When there is constipation, Abipattikar Churna is recommended. Where there is burning sensation in the limbs and body, give Brihat Guruchayadi Lauha with the juice of menisperum glabrum and honey. Sulagajendra Taila or Brihat Guruchyadi Taila may be rubbed on the stomach to lessen the pain, and if there is sleeplessness, on the head to induce sound sleep.

Diet: If rice suits, give rice with fish soup. If not, give rice gruel or parched rice gruel. The less water and watery substances, the better. On the other hand green cocoanut water or the juice of trifala is very good. Don’t allow the patient to have sweet things, fried things, lentils, spinach, sour things, chillies, curd, or milk If they agree with the stomach, puffed rice and cocoanut are helpful.
